As part of the SmartMove project, eight rural and peripheral regions in Europe will prepare, implement and evaluate local active mobility consultancy (AMC) campaigns. All eight regions face similar problems in terms of their public transport systems, and these problems are also typical of many other European rural areas. Levels of service are insufficient as the population density is low. Such problems have been exacerbated in recent decades due to a decreasing and ageing population and to increased levels of private car use.
The SmartMove implementing regions were carefully selected in order to represent characteristics typical of European rural regions. Having identified shared problems, it will be possible to replicate many of the solutions – and most importantly the AMC campaigns – in other European regions.
