This event was an opportunity to give advice to local authorities and others about the use of individualised marketing to maximise patronage of rural transport systems on tight budgets.

New publications from SmartMove
In recent months, several SmartMove publications have been finalised and posted on the project website. They include a brochure giving an overview of the project’s mobility marketing concept; a set of guidelines to aid authorities and transport operators carrying out active mobility consultancy (AMC) campaigns; and a state-of-the-art report on AMCs.

In Kreis Euskirchen, older residents key to public transport’s future
It may seem counterintuitive but in many rural areas public transport targets its marketing muscle at retired people rather than the youngest generation of consumers.

Eastern German activities target declining rural area
Initial results of the local public transport operator's AMC campaign have confirmed that many residents simply don’t know about line 147. It is hoped that ridership will go up by simply drawing people’s attention to the service’s existence.

Krakow AMC targets neglected suburban bus lines
The AMC campaign will start in the second half of May. Active measures will follow, including meetings with inhabitants, the provision of information to churches, free bus rides, citizen audits, meetings at schools, and the dissemination of general information during a survey.

Building on experience in Burgos
The AMC campaign in Burgos started on April 20 and will wrap up at the end of May before the local elections. The short deadline is a challenge, but because Burgos’s project builds on previous work, local implementers believe they have an advantage.

With significant congestion problems from both weekday commuters and weekend beachgoers, Almada has much to gain by persuading car users to shift to its well-developed but underused public transport system.

Sister project focuses on bike-train-bike travel
With its focus on environmentally friendly “last-mile” travel, SmartMove is in good company. The BiTiBi initiative, also funded by the Intelligent Energy Europe Programme, promotes one of the most promising but underused last-mile modes of all – the bicycle.
